Virtually every police officer knew the location by heart. Two long-feuding neighbors were the source for many neighborhood disturbance calls, and police cruisers had been frequent visitors over the past two years. But then Officer Steve Tomberlin was called in. This local businessman and former police officer recalls the incident—some would call it a turning point—as if it was yesterday. Arriving on the scene, Steve spent time speaking with each neighbor, discussing their concerns and their goals. Then he helped them come to a new understanding of each other. The next day Steve received a call from one of them, thanking him for his help and sharing that the time he devoted to speaking to each of them had brought them to a resolution. There were no more complaints.
A Community Presence
The experience taught Steve that effective law enforcement was based on finding solutions to prevent a crime from happening. To Steve, this meant being an active presence in the community, not just responding when the calls came in. So he participated in an innovative community policing program that included officers patrolling on mountain bikes, getting to know the neighborhoods and the people who inhabited them. That’s just one of the many ways this gifted local businessman has touched his community.
A Force for Change
Steve has always believed that it’s important to be a positive force for change in his community, to have an impact for the better. In addition to the community policing program, Steve developed a successful bicycling club for youths at risk, working with other adults as mentors. Also, he was one of the founders of The Classical Academy, a charter school in District 20, currently serving on the Board of Directors.
